POWER5 9405-520 DVD drive options
What seems to be the best DVD drive replacement option? It’s original slimline DVD drive recently stopped working (it couldn’t even handle a full IBM i V7R1 install V7R1 got installed with errors) and I tried a replacement which couldn’t even complete a D mode IPL.

Just install a standard 5.25 DVD drive in the bay where the tape drive typically resides, then connect it up with whatever it has (IDE or SATA).

Those slimline DVDs (if they're the same as the ones used in thinkcentres) are a proprietary connector.

I think it’s an Ultrabay 2000 connector but anyway I don’t think I have SATA or IDE back there because I got the big connector in the tape drive bay.

Something doesn't seem quite right. Am I missing something here?

I'm going to assume this is the correct one (older thinkpad connector). I noticed the older ThinkPad DVD drives start to flake out after awhile. They must have degradation issues with the laser or something so you could be in an endless cycle of buying one until it 'works'.

I guess the other option is a SCSI DVD drive as that system looks to have U320 SCSI. I would probably try to see how to replace the tape drive with one of those instead.
