How does IRIX assign sound device ID's? - Axatax - 03-11-2019

Octane with a RAD PCI in the card cage.  Previously, the built-in sound was card #1, and the RAD was card #2 (as seen in the audio mixer).

I moved the RAD PCI to another slot in the card cage, and now it shows up as card #3, with the internal audio as card #1.

How can I make these cards show up sequentially as #1 and #2?

My guess is that symbolic links are set or were being set in the hardware graph when installing a device and its driver. If you start installing the RAD card in a certain PCI slot, then shut down the machine and move the card into another PCI slot it adds a new link instead of moving the old link.

I'm not sure how to proceed in getting your sound card back to id #2. You could attempt a forced "autoconfig -f" followed by a reboot to see if that helps resetting the hardware graph.

I wouln't be surprised if deleting /etc/ioconfig.conf and a reboot fixed this. It works for scsi, network and keyboards/mice, so might work for audio too.
