Which Apple computer do you use daily?

Post by Irinikus » Fri May 25, 2018 12:26 pm

The machine which I use daily is my Mac Pro 2013 (I'm posting from it now)

People seem either love or hate this machine. (I personally love it.)

It's small, extremely quiet, energy efficient and has more than enough compute and graphical power as far as I'm concerned.

I certainly wouldn't recommend going out and buying on of these machines new now, but judging from the experience I've had with mine, I would buy the next Mac Pro at the drop of a hat.

Here are some pictures of my machine:

Love it! Wish I had one of those... Eventually, right?
Suggestion, you should have a G4 Cube (tissue dispenser) near the Mac Pro (trash can) lol!

It looks like the new design and spec will be made public later this year, for an actual release sometime in 2019.

As far as I understand it, intel is due to release a new processor next year, so it would make the most sense to release it then.

I would highly recommend you go for one, as the Mac Pro 2013 has definitely been my best computer experience thus far. (Nothing else that I've ever had, remotely compares. Its silent, energy efficient and just works when you turn it on!)

I will definitely do so, when the opportunity presents itself.

None for me. Until November last year I did have a Mac Mini that ran 24/7 as a download machine and mini file-server. It was an old 2008 one (Core 2 Duo) that had received numerous upgrades over its life, but was very much showing its age after 9 years of use. That the RAM essentially maxed out at 4GB was also increasingly a problem.

I did look at the newer Mac Minis when replacing it, but decided against due to high cost, complete lack of upgradability, plus the fact that the hardware in the newest Mac Mini was 2-3 years old. Hence instead I went for a NUC as I could get a more modern, smaller and completely upgradable machine for less than Apple were charging.

Would I get a future Apple machine? Doubtful. Too many issues with everything being soldered down on 95% of them, plus the "Apple tax" that means they cost an arm and a leg. Sorry, I buy my machines for tinkering, not as a short-term and disposable product.

Sounds like my Mac Mini Server, bit younger than yours Trippynet, late 2009. Brilliant machines, upgraded to SSD & 8GB Ram, years and years of software updates, it's soooooo slooooooow.

I am considering (if I can find them) re-installing original OSX server 10.6 (fantastic edition I feel) and using the features/services to run my UNIX side of things.

In many ways, I see the Mac Pro as being similar in concept to that of the SGI Octane, it has no internal CD-ROM drive, the RAM and CPU are upgradable, the graphics is proprietary and therefore only upgradable to the highest spec that they released when the machine was released, and just look at how many Octanes are still going today!

In many way's SGI's were designed to be just as disposable as any Mac!

The Mac Minnie on the other hand doesn't appeal to me at all though, as it's really is just a MacBook without a screen. (Hence the soldered in RAM on the later units.)

My main, daily use computer is 2010 mac pro with firmware upgraded to 5.1, 2.93 GHz 6-core, gtx 1060. It's for me good enough to daily work as well steam gaming via SteamLink.

My daily driver is:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) (i5 2.5ghz, 16GB SSD 10.12.6) [Did the upgrades my self of course]

Also:

My MacMini (Early 2009) (P7350 @ 2.00GHz, 8GB - Centos 7) - This was my desktop until we moved, with the OS limitation I dropped OS X and installed Centos 7, when it's home I use it as media player, but it's actually an OpenVAS security scanner that I can dropped into a location for internal network scan. Macmini's are good hardware, sad things are becoming less upgradeable.
