Indy 8-bit Virtual24 technology

Post by bkd » Fri Aug 10, 2018 11:27 am

Does anyone know how to turn this function on? I have old indy with 8-bit graphics and heard that it can do hardware dithering and applications thinks that system has 24 bit framebuffer. Is it 5.x only technology or I can use it in 6.5?

Okay, but how to turn this on? Should I edit some config files?

When installing IRIX on the Indy it will automatically set the colordepth of the X server to 8 bit. It doesn't matter if you have an XL8 or XL24 graphic card, or any other system for that matter.

This colordepth is set in /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.
See this link for some example configurations.

Usually users have to modify the Xservers file to set the colordepth to 24 bit truecolor from pseudocolor instead of the other way around.
