Display mode problems..

Post by workingclasshacker » Wed Aug 08, 2018 6:56 pm

Ok, so my Octane2 started working after I pulled two sticks of RAM out.

But I couldn't find a proper display setting. Everything looks nice from the "Welcome to OCTANE" screen until the "System is coming up". Then the screen goes into an unsupported mode, and I cannot access the system.

Is there a way to change the display mode from the Maintenance menu?

can you console/telnet/ssh in? If you can the you would do something like

Code: Select all

setmon -x 1280x1024_60
or whatever mode you have .vfo files for

Code: Select all

find /usr/gfx | grep vfo
I hear there were some old prom commands, but I dunno if they work on Octanes, but I guess you can see if this works

Code: Select all

setenv monitor h
or

Code: Select all

setenv monitor l

I tried the PROM commands, they didn't do anything, but I'll definitely check out if I can telnet in.

Do you know if you can use a serial terminal on a default Irix 6.5?

Also is there a way to define custom modes to better suit my monitor?

When I set my Tezro up a few months ago, with my current screen, I stupidly selected a display setting which was incompatible with my monitor, which pretty much landed me up in your position.

IRIX has it's own saved video settings, which are independent to those in the Prom, so thats why you can get a proper video output while in the Prom and as soon as IRIX starts to load, you loose picture. Because of this, you can't simply fix this problem from the command monitor in the Prom.

You will have to go in via serial, I think the settings are (9600 / 8-N-1) for the Octane and log in as root and type: (The mouse and keyboard must not be connected.)

Code: Select all

/usr/gfx/setmon -x 1280x1024_60
This approach solved the same problem on my Tezro.

Once in the prom, type: single
Press return.
You can then login in and use the command above from Irinikus.

single user mode worked like a charm! Telnet and SSH didn't btw.
