Errors adding profiles on first bootup of IRIX

Post by LarBob » Sun Jul 15, 2018 3:10 pm

Just did a fresh 6.5.30f IRIX install on my Origin 300. On first boot I get this:

Code: Select all

The system is coming up.

network: WARNING: IRIS's Internet address is the default.
Using standalone network mode.
UX:mv: ERROR: /etc/resolv.conf - No such file or directory
Warning: Internet Gateway web server running as root.
Use "chkconfig webface_apache off" to disable.

Does anyone know what might be the cause of this? It keeps slowly failing to add profiles.
It eventually brings me to the console login but it takes a LONG time, maybe 30 minutes to the prompt.

EDIT: After reboot, those profile errors didn't show.

Code: Select all

Starting new eventmond...
No System change detected.
emgrlogger: EMGR daemon is not running!
Then I was brought to the prompt. However, it still took a good 15-20 minutes probably. Any suggestions?

Edit: A missing /etc/resolv.conf would explain everything having to wait on network things timing out. Maybe create one? (Was this a "partial" install?)

Those look like lines from the (regular) boot up - do you see anything in the L1 during the initial power on?

I think you can look at the L1 log with 'log' when serially connected which might provide further info.

Also maybe check in the syslog (/var/adm/SYSLOG).

There's a guide to L1/L2 bits here that's applicable for O300 too: http://irix7.com/techpubs/007-3938-003.pdf

I'm not expert on these things unfortunately (gradually finding my way around a rack tezro) - but I'd maybe check versions of everything. Might be the prom nvram needs resetting or the prom itself updating.

My O2 took 10min on the first boot, and it was because networking wasn't configured. I don't think I've ever had a resolv.conf created by irix on a clean install. Go and make one and put your domain and nameserver in and it should speed up a lot.

The system still hangs on "Starting new eventmond..." for a good 20 minutes or so even with networking properly configured. :/

EDIT: Ignore that. Remnants of autoconfig_ipaddress being on for some reason were overwriting my changes. Fixing /etc/resolv.conf (again) and fixing /etc/hosts (again) fixed the issue and it starts up fine now. Thanks.
