Alias PowerAnimator v6.0 or v7.0

Post by vertex fridge » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:16 am

Hey, ever since the Nekochan website went down i've been having trouble finding older version of PA that Alias|Wavefront had produced back in the 90s, it's very rare to find such program compared to Alias Maya, i could've sworn PA would've been at least a little more recognizable over the internet seeing how most big companies used it to produce games and or movies back in the day.

I mean like, more documentation regarding it and perhaps a download or two.. Any help would be appreciated though

Maybe isn't too much to say that Power Animator is the holly grail of IRIX software, and that's why is somehow mysteriously hidden and hardly obtainable. In the heyday full PA seat with accompanying decent SGI machine was worth near $100K which is mind blowing from today perspective. Because of that and other things and reasons, the "exclusivity" of PA somehow remained cultivated through collectors and hobbyists community even if long time forgotten and gone.

Here and there you will find on eBay a full AliasWavefront PA big "package" with CD's and books and all that stuff for few hundred bucks, but there is a catch - almost always no licence. PA license is locking itself to each machine hardware network address, that means is locked to specific machine. So you can buy some nice hardware with PA on it already, or you must have a keygen that will give you the license. I'm not sure if there was a hardlock key for it, but i know for sure; a little bird told me, there was a keygen floating around.

I have a couple of those big black boxes. Annoyingly, one even has a license sheet, but no installation media :(

As you realized already, the FLEXlm license keys are nodelocked. Basically, you had to pass an activation key or serial number plus the hostid of the system to Alias, and they'd send you the license file. Needless to say they stopped doing that, so buying an A|W package will not result in a licensed copy on your system, but only some nice books on a shelf.

There was no hardlock and that little bird wasn't lying.

Any photos of these PA boxes would be highly appreciated..

PS. I do have a way of activating the PA 8.5 and up, at least.
Send me a msg if interested cause I do not seem to be able to do so right now (the forum won't let new members send PMs)

I bought a PA 8.1 system when I had way too much money, I was going to sell it when I sort of fell out of the SGI scene, here are the photo's I took. I ended up not selling it and converted the system into my COFF/IRIX5.3 system. I will make a post about that in the future (COFF software I suppose - still thinking it over).

Anyway - here are the photos I took of a PowrAnimator 8.1 seat

I have an original Alias 6 CD-ROM from 1995, will try to see if it is still readable and upload it. Really hope we could have something like win world or vetusware for Irix. Especially the older software is extremely rare.
