Base install 6.5.22m for O2

Post by JacquesT » Sun Jun 03, 2018 12:53 pm

Can anybody recommend a 'streamlined' and lightweight .22m install for O2 keeping all the original apps, like acroread instead of pdf. I've picked up on the 6.5.30 thread about leaving off the apps cd's. But I'm thinking of a minimal 'process' and daemon install that won't bog an already slow O2 down even more.

And is it just me, but does .30 seem snappier than .22?

:O2: 300Mhz R5200, 384Mb, 6.5.22m, FPA with :1600SW: [300Mhz R12k project in the works]

If you choose to install the apps CD's later through the software manager, you can customise your install and install only the apps that you want to.

Although the no support contract required version of 6.5.22 lacks the choices provided by the previous IRIX "feature and "maintenance" install streams, 6.5.22 is fairly immune from the removal of classic IRIX features and apps that first appeared in with IRX 6.5.23 and continued to the bitter end.

When doing a new clean install of IRIX I normally install only the minimum needed to get a running desktop, and install everything else from the "Customize Installation" tab of Software Manager. That allows me to include only those items I want, and the customized install lets me expand the products I want to make sure I include many of the nice bits that do not come with a canned "default" install. Ian touches on the process of doing minimalist install from the PROM in his article "Installing IRIX 6.5"

6.5.22 still has the adobe fonts and acroread - I think that got replaced in 6.5.23 if memory serves correct.
