Just arrived home with my £30 Origin 2000, it will have to stay in the boot of the car till Tuesday though.
Interesting it has a Graphics Card, and a 'media?' option. This has ADAT, Digital in/out sync, sound and 4 serial ports. I don't know what this is called.

Actually, I think I'll dump a Tezro somewhere else and bring it in the house.. too excited.

Very nice!

Your car must have a rather big boot to take that little monster!

Is she in good condition?

Show us some pics once you have her in the house!

It's an estate car, and I think something broke on the way home.

The skins are OK, but not perfect in anyway.

In the case of my Onyx2, the skins were perfectly intact when I got her, but they had some deep scratches, so I chose to flat them down completely and am still deciding what I'm going to do. (all of the plastics are now perfectly smooth.)

I plan on giving her a custom colour (Ivory white with the SGI logo in titanium silver appeals to me and would fit in with the decor of my Cape Town home, as that's where she's going to stay.)

The new paint job will only be done once I hopefully upgrade the graphics option to Infinite Realiy 4 later this year. (I don't ever plan on selling the machine, so I think she'll look rather spiffy with a custom paint job!)

I'm unfortunately an absolute purist though, so I have to seriously negotiate with myself on this.

I could always get her sprayed professionally in her original colour in a mat finish. (The finish would be better than it originally was when she was new, but it's still not original)

To be really honest, the original finish on the Origin2000/Onyx2 was never really that good to begin with. (The rough texture of the plastic was not homogenise.)

It is an IO6G, making your machine capable of running a desktop system when a graphic option like an SI or SE is installed. Technically your system is now an onyx2 albeit without the capability of running IR graphics pipe. You need a new backplane and cooling tray for that

Have it the house.. Skins off.. found correct power lead..

Just about to turn it on connected to serial console.

Must say, not as comfortable to sit on as the Tezro is.

Fingers crossed.

[Edit}
After finding the little power flick switch, it's powering on..

Nothing from serial console though.

And front panel message is.. 063f3f1 maybe a fault?

[Edit edit]
Now have serial out

taking it's time on the memory.

Rest of the boards are populated, so I guess I need to spread some memory?

This is what the Onyx2 shows on the display when it's ok, I don't know if the Origin2000 is the same though:

That looks good, they do take forever to initialise their memory depending on how much is installed, but it's looking good!

It's very interesting that the machine was configured in this way!

Did it give you a memory error?

My Onyx2 only has 1GB of RAM installed in it and it takes quite a while to initialise the memory, I have been warned that if I install 8GB, that it will take a really long time to initialise.

I wonder if all of the banks actually need to be populated with numalink, as from what I understand, there is a numalink router on the mid-plane and the system pools its memory? (I'm probably completely wrong though!)
