Day job

Post by JacquesT » Wed Jun 20, 2018 7:34 am

What's your day / night job and does it link to your SGI kicks?

I design buildings, including houses and housing developments as a day job. Architecture was my second choice after Computer gfx / animation but there were no schools / universities / institutions that taught animation in South Africa in the '90s. So I ended up studying Architecture.

I do legal work, mostly temporary document review projects with teams of attorneys that last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. I used to do computer animation for movies & video games and am still kicking myself for giving it up, it was way more fun.

I am currently a military aviator (flying instructor qualified) with experience on the following types:

Pilatus PC-7 MKII trainer (Instructor qualified on type)

Aloette III helicopter (Initial Rotor Wing conversion)

Atlas Oryx helicopter (Maritime and NVG qualified)

C-47TP Turbo Dakota (Maritime qualified)

CASA 212 (Used in a tactical role)

Our simulators at the Central Flying School were run by SGI Onyx2 Infinite Reality machines (I don’t know which revision though), when I received my ab initio training back in 2003, they have since been upgraded and obviously don’t run on SGI machines anymore.

I am an audiophile, so my main hobby has always been hi-fi, but vintage computers have started to interest me more, and I would therefore have to say that they are now my main hobby.

I'm currently juggling three jobs for my company. Firstly (and my main job) is a senior data analyst, so responsible for extracting data and generating reports covering various aspects of the service that my firm delivers to customers across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). I also manage several other processes for them.

On top of that, I manage all of our contractual documentation between a key customer and our various partners, and I currently provide executive-level IT support at one of our customer's larger sites in Scotland.

Some bits are more enjoyable than others, but it keeps me busy. No real link with SGIs, except that our customer is in the Oil & Gas business and used to use SGIs back in the 90s for CAD and CFD. Those days are long gone now of course.
