330 / 550 cases

Post by uunix » Tue Jul 03, 2018 7:49 am

I saw some cases.. and was told they were empty (at first), I never inspected them.

I thought, oh yes, I'll put a few server MBs in them.

So on collection, turns out they have the insides in the main, and I was told that, in fact one just needed a new power supply which he then gave me. (All this FOC BTW).

So I take them home and leave then for a bit, until today, I decided to bring them into work and strip them down.

I took the 550 apart first, striped it all out, it was dirty and had no hdd nor graphics card. 1 CPU and 1GB Ram (4x256).

Then I took a look at the 330 and thought, ah heck, lets give it a go. So I installed the supplied PSU and it came up.. well sort of. The hard drive sounded like it was straining with the new attention it was getting, but I did have the SGI boot up bios screen. So I ran through SCSI tests with the inbuilt raid controller and the drive failed.

It sounded like it was having to power up each time it was read / accessed. So I went a scouting for a new more powerful PSU and low and behold I found one.

Fitted it, and what do you know, booted straight up into XP asking for a password. I clicked on the password hint and it said.. "It is what it's asking for"
lol.. password.. and I was in. Super. Unfortunately, nothing installed and drives wiped. It's just running 110 updates currently, but seems OK actually.. so although it's not really a true SGI in many peoples eyes, think I may keep it running.

Now, this machine has 512MB Ram, a 40GB SCSI drive and 2x500MHz PIII and was registered to a company called Voodoo Animation.

Now I get to thinking, maybe I should take a closer look at the 550, for 1 specific reason.
The 330 only has 5 smaller 32bit PCi Slots and I have a project in mind that requires a full length 64 bit slot.

See, some time back, I aquired a full package of a Pinnacle Targa 3000 system (inc software, card, and some breakout boards).

So once the 330 has finished updating, I'll start putting the 550 back together.. which leaves me one embarrassing question...

Cheers..

and lotsa non-SGI stuff

The VW550 is a nice system (for a PC ;) ), because it uses the high end i840 chipset. I've upgraded mine to double Pentium III 1 GHz Xeons. It runs Windows 2000 and XP nicely, add an nVidia graphics card and you will have a good all-around system, supporting both OpenGL and Direct3D.

Update:

The 330 is now a very nice machine running windows Xp (took 500 updates over two days). Clean and fresh. It has 512MB Ram (I have ordered another 1GB to max out). I did a surface scan to check for any hidden /deleted files and found zero.. I plan on using this with a 1600sw and an MLA, with USB SGI black keyboard and whatever mice I can find unfortunately (run out of SGI mice). I will install WinX on it to get a good X-Window from all the UNIX boxes.

The 550 was my plan to use the Pinnacle Tegra3000 (3100) and capture uncompressed video, I rebuilt the machine (minus a drive), but alas, when the T3100 is inserted into any PCi slot the system will hang before bios .. PAH.. So I will just build it up and clean it.. shame.

The T3100 I have also has SD breakout and the normal component / composite etc, it would be a shame if it's bad, but, I hear many are.

This is odd. The 550 is a certified configuration for the Targa 3000: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/computervices ... -06-06.pdf

Thanks for that, yes it should, so I suspect the board is faulty, but I'll check tomorrow, maybe I didn't turn off the power management, or needs a bios update etc.. fingers crossed anyway.

The 330 though is up and running with eComStation and VisualAge C++ (which I compiled and tested my lotto application on this afternoon - runs rather slow though). Also running BackAgain/2000 onto a DDS4 quite well. It's quite a smart system.
