O2 CDROM black bezel

Post by JacquesT » Wed Jun 06, 2018 7:45 am

So I installed a Toshiba SD -M1401 in my O2, all is good with DVD access. (Firmware 1007 will not read dvd discs due to 512/2048 block size issues. Setting the drive to 2048 doesn't work either. Firmware 1009 works though)

The drive internal layout is different to the original cdrom, while the O2 faceplate fits the tray, the black bezel wont fit due to the lip that projects into the drive, under the drive tray.

I know O2+ machines shipped with the M1401 drive, were there two versions of the bezel?

So to answer my own question, yes you have to cut the protruding lip off and then take an additional 1mm off the bottom edge where the lip was. You also need to fit a 1.5mm spacer to the rear of the button so that it works with the drives's open/close microswitch.

Hi JacquesT,
I got from ebay a Toshiba SD -M1401. I should have it in several days. The firmware (1007 / 1009) is for the DVD-Rom or for O2? How can be upgraded if is the one that doesn't work?
Thanks,
blacksmith

Hi,

The 1009 firmware is for the DVD drive. You will need a Sun box or PC that has a SCSI card + Windows 2000 or DOS. Seriously, DOS is much easier...! I used an Adaptec AHA 2940UW Pro card in a HP z620 machine and it worked fine with DOS drivers and the DOS flashing utility.

If you've bought a Sun Toshiba drive (grey bezel) then you'll receive a flashing error, you can ignore this as it flashes but cannot match the ROM code.

Firmware 1007 won't read DVD's properly, it will just spit out transfer errors. It will read CD's fine though. Firmware 1009 added a sort of auto block sense to the firmware to swap between CD / DVD rom format and block size. I've not installed the dvdcss library yet so have only tested non-commercial DVD discs. With the firmware patched you can leave the jumper on 512bytes for boot purposes, it will switch to 2048 automatically once you insert a DVD.

I bought and flashed two drives, one is 1009 RPC-2 Region locked and the other RPC-1 Region Free, just in case...!

Thanks JacquesT.
Could you, please, send me the link for the firmware upgrade file?
