Connecting to L1

Post by Fascia » Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:41 pm

Alright Tezro rusers :tezro:

How do you connect to an L1 port so you can see the serial console? Do I really need an L2 controller and L3 software? Or is there a way I can get a standard serial output from this thing?

There is a port at the back that says 'Console'

You also need to set it to 38400 baud, if you have it set to 9600 you'll get garbage.

Ah, okay. I thought that port wasn't enabled till the OS booted. I'll give it a try.

Are there any conditions that need to be met for something to appear? Neither 38400 nor 9600 yield output, garbage or otherwise, from the Console or serial #1 ports. I tried booting without a keyboard/mouse/display, but still no serial output. I get output from other machines, but nothing from my Tezro.

As mentioned, Set your serial terminal 38,400 /8 / N / 1.

Connect your serial terminal via null modem cable to the Tezro port marked as 'console'.

Even if the Tezro is not is not powered up, the L1 should be live and respond.

Once you get a response, the can switch between the L1 and the PROM or IRIX console by pressing the "Control" key and the "D" key or the "Control and "T" keys.

Unlike earlier generations of SGI hardware, with IP35 system like your Tezro the Console/L1 port is fully functional with the keyboard, mouse and monitor connected. In fact they remain fully functional even with IRIX booted and running in graphics mode.

What type of machine are you connecting to your Tezro via console?

Im going to go through the process that I use to start my Tezro from my Mac, as they're always connected, so that I don't have to start the machine by having to continuously open the front door and push the power button. (as both the door and power button will ware out eventually)

I make use of a program called SerialTools, which is easy to use and works very well. (if you'er using a PC, use PuTTY or hyper-terminal and they work the same way)

When I initially open SerialTools with the Tezro off, this is what I get: (nothing)

I wake the machine up by first hitting ctrl-d to get this: (I find that if the machine's been switched off at the wall, as mine usually is when not in use, hitting ctrl-t initially won't wake it up)

Screen Shot 2018-06-16 at 07.39.14.png

I then hit ctrl-t to get the L1 prompt: (issuing the command "pwr u" at the L1 prompt gets the machine to startup)

EDIT:

PuTTY works in the same way as SerialTools does:

HyperTerminal doesn't: (I couldn't get to the L1 prompt with the machine turned off.)

So I would use PuTTY on a PC if I were you.

woot it's working!

Hmm, is there any way to interact with the prom via console? With or without the monitor plugged in, it only gives the prom menu in graphics. When the miniroot for installing irix loads, the screen goes black, my whole venture is trying to figure out why, but yielding no fruit. If I can invoke the install via serial console, hopefully that'll yield a usable installer or at least provide some feedback, as right now the prom doesn't print anything out once the menu is up, and L1 logs show nothing amis.

What version of IRIX are you trying to install?

I’ve had this problem before.

The Tezro needs a later version of IRIX 6.5, if I can remember correctly 6.5.22 is the oldest version that will install on a Tezro.

I would personally suggest that you install 6.5.30.

EDIT:

I forget, the miniroot just failed to load in this case.

This is what you see in this case:

I've got 6.5.30, or at least that's what the ISOs said.
