Nekochan downtime discussion

Yeesh. I figured here in our little niche flavored Unix world we would be outside the reach of the economic or cultural Marxism rampant basically everywhere else. Meaning the way your own personal data is treated as if it is only beneficial to anyone else but yourself.

Nice having this place to land though. A strange coincidence as well. Love nekochan but this could end up being far more up to date simply by manner of relevant information being organized as need arises.

The EU is practically a super nanny state at this point. I don't fucking get those fucking socialists.

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
When Pete first asked for donors he said that if he didn't receive enough donations to cover the costs of the site he would be willing to turn it over, with the complete database dating back to the very beginning, to someone else. Obviously, the donations he received covered the cost and he turned the donations off because he didn't want to make a profit off the site. So who knows, if he's unwilling to ever run it again himself (he certainly hasn't shown any interest in it in many years) maybe he could still be cajoled to cough up the database. As far as contacting any of the US based mods (which I haven't tried to do), josehill can be contacted via josehill dot com. Don't know if he's got Pete's ear or not. Actually, I don't know anything at all about Pete, I've never looked at his (or anyone else's) twitter feed. As far as I'm concerned twitter is proof positive that we are very near the end of civilization...

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
I believe Pete when he says that he is busy but that he will provide a data dump of the forums. Personally I hadn't seen him in the moderators section in a very long time. You see, I tried to resign as a moderator a while ago but only Pete could remove my powers and I didn't want to email him just for that. It seemed like it would be a shitty thing to do, bringing him back just revoke something I once enjoyed. Besides, he seems to be enjoying other projects and communities, he should do that and have fun. Great guy.

If you ask me, I don't think the nekochan forums will be coming back online in any meaningful sense. Why would you bring it back? The community is a shadow of what it was, and all you got left is a couple new guys and a bunch of salty greybeards who are just political shitposters with no real purpose. Yeah, in case you are wondering I am talking about skywriter and hamei. Don't get me wrong, I love hamei and consider him a friend, but there is only so much revisionist communist propaganda (that is a clear rules violation) that you should let someone get away with. That looks bad to new members when they see rules being applied based on seniority, not standards.

It was supposed to be a tech board, not a free-speech heaven for a handful of people and everyone else gets edited, locked and warned. That was a moderator problem, we just kept up with tradition and didn't try to rock the boat. We figured the forum was mostly self-policing, and it was, but there had been others who just couldn't stop. Wouldn't stop.

Neko and the moderators are great guys, in all honesty they just wanted to help tend that little garden and for a time it was good. Now I guess I don't need my moderator abilities revoked, time has done it for me.

Hey VPC, glad to see you found your way here.

We ended up adding dexter1 to the mods list here, mostly because we need someone to cover the EU timezones when I'm asleep as I am a second shifter and Praetor is also a night owl.

I'd welcome hamei here if he gets over his own ego enough to join, but I also don't want him and other greybeards treating the place like some private club.

In any case, we're glad to have you here man.

As far as I'm concerned, though, I think it's potentially for the best if Nekochan stays offline, mostly because this site is actively trying to grow the community while the draconian rules about software that Pete had in place were holding the community back, and making the hobby un-appealing to new people.

IMHO as I've said many times, it's time to move on. We have everything we need to rebuild, IMHO.

Nekochan down - panic
So ive been on a trip for a few days and when I got back home i found that nekochan has been down for a few days with the possibility of not coming back up. I learned of this forum from the classic computer mailing list. I am looking to get in contact with the owner of the nekochan forums, to see what is going on. If he is planning on shutting down the site, i want to look into hosting an archive of the information nekochan provided.

I only spoke with the owner of nekochan in a couple random posts and do not have any contact information for him.
Any information on the subject or contact information for the person in charge of nekochan would be much appriciated.

Hey, good to see you around! There's actually already a thread for this: https://forums.irix.cc/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=74
TL;DR - nekonoko took the site down supposedly to figure out how to be GPDR compliant and has said he plans to bring the site back up at some point, but nobody's clear on when that will be or why he'd need to be GPDR compliant when he's US-based and it's all a little confusing.
