Nekochan downtime discussion

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
On topic, I asked nekonoko on Twitter if I could get an export of my posts and DMs from the forum and was told he didn't have time to do so, but that he does plan to bring the site back eventually. I know he doesn't really owe me anything, but I can't help but feel a bit cross about it. How hard would it be to do a quick export? I'm not familiar with the software that was running Nekochan, but I can't imagine it would have taken that much time.

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
Nekochan Forums runs on phpBB. From what I can tell, it has no method of exporting just one user's data (especially since he's on an older version). There's an unofficial in-development extension that allows it, but nekonoko would have to install it, it's sort of old, etc, plus you'd get your data back in its format, whatever that is. Anyway, good to see it's going back online eventually.

Ah, okay. I'm used to everything running on top of SQL where it's stupid easy to export data. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that phpBB is less flexible.

I like how Carlo is simultaneously pretending that this latest alias isn't him and responding directly to criticisms of his site and his person.

In theory, it's possible to manually extract fields from the database by forcing the PHPBB-engine to do it, i.e. recycling the PHP code of a few modules for the purpose. My team did it. Not a piece of cake, but it's a possible solution to migrate a database from a PHPBB-version to another.

Fresh news, this link (->Chunks->OtherWebSites) adds a few websites related to retro-computing stuff.
Irix.cc is in the list!

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
Okay, so Okonoko regardless if he's Carlo or not has been given an indefinite ban for bringing up old drama.

You're gonna be reading this, and know this:

We don't want old drama here. When you're ready to move past it all, we'll consider unbanning you, but for now we're going to revoke that privilege.

Us listing Down The Bunker was a diplomatic move, and a privilege. Continued attempts to evade a ban will be counted against you, up to and including not welcoming you back ever and refusing to acknowledge your projects.

Please take this seriously if you ever want to seriously be a part of the community, we know what happened and the libel you spread against uunix, me and dozens of other forum members.

Why would you and Dodoid or anybody else from the Nekochan forum see a need for diplomacy with this guy? In the end he repeatedly annoyed and harassed users and mods - in and outside of the forum. And after he blew it with people multiple times he continued to sneak in with another name and start his show again adding lies here and there. He always tries to benefit from the community he hates so much. Best thing: Trying to sell the same stuff he has on Ebay on Nekochan but trying to disguise it by not providing pictures...

I just banned his most recent user here because he's obviously not ready to move forward and on with his life.

I think one of the members here asked him, looks like Thunderbird32:

I'd take it with a grain of salt. Last time Nekochan was down for several weeks.

The IRIX Network is moving ahead and not concerned about Nekochan. I'd even say, that we've been brought together by this loss and are going to become a stronger community because of it.

If Nekochan comes back on, Dodoid has a plan to grab a R/O copy of it and keep it updated. But I'm certainly not banking on Nekochan returning to normal, even under new leadership. Pete's lost his will to run the site.

Re: Nekochan downtime discussion
Even if nekochan doesn't come online, most of the topics should be preserved.
I doubt nekonoko is going to provide a SQL dump of the posts, but we could parse them through archive.org and list them at least as static html content.
Let me know what you think.
