Best Monitor option for SGI machines?
#21
Re: Best Monitor option for SGI machines?
I unfortunately already have the same set of vfo's.

When I try to load the 1920x1080_72 vfo in xsetmon, it tells me that it's not a standard xsetmon gamma setting. (and it doesn't load!)

I've currently set the system up with [email protected]_60 and have moved the icons to all fit in the primary screen, so I at least have one complete desktop running at 1920x1080_60, but this doesn't help me for flame at all.

Is there not a way to assign a complete desktop to each output from the DCD?

so what happens when you try to load 1920x1154_60? That's what I have my system set to, and that worked on every monitor I tried so far

My monitor tells me that the timings are incorrect and I have to go in via serial to reset the graphics. (This is strange to me, as the monitor runs @60 Hz!)

Im just going to have to sort the problem out in the future by getting my hands on one or two of the best monitors possible which which push 1920x1200_60 and have a native DVI interface. (I have other priorities at the moment though, so this is going to have to wait I'm afraid.)

I will research the subject before I buy anything.

Maya's keeping me rather busy and satisfied at the moment though, and I can't do everything at once, so I will get the right monitor for flame, when I can fit it in to get the other peripherals that I need to make the best of Flame.

Thanks for all the help thus far! :D

These are the two monitors that I'll consider:

  • EIZO CE240W
  • Sony SDM-P234

Both push a resolution of 1920x1200!

I have a Dell 2407WFP, loads of inputs (with DVI) for older gear (not DP or HDMI though) and does 1920x1200 happily. Also does SoG happily.
Octane  1x 400Mhz R12k, 1Gb, V8, 6.5.30m

O2 300Mhz R12K (R10K upgrade mod),  384Mb, 6.5.30m, FPA  with  1600SW (Original R5K chassis, mobo and cpu in storage)

Used those for many years, we still have some hanging around at work. They use CCFL backlights, though, so they run hot for an LCD panel. Also, they're 10 years old now, so the backlights will burn out.

Both of these are 10 years old so they will have CCFL backlights about to die. The EIZO has a bloody TN panel inside so it's color reproduction is going to suck.

Why not buy a new monitor with an IPS panel? NEC makes monitors that still support SOG on the VGA input. Something like a NEC MultiSync EA244WMi or EA245WMi. NEC SpectraView monitors are more expensive but can be calibrated and are suitable for professional, color critical work (EIZO makes monitors in that category also, but stopped SOG support years ago).

I have a mix of NEC screens on my desk: an EA275WMi (27", 2560x1440, PC), an LCD2690WUXi² (26", 1920x1200, Tezro/Octane2/Onyx2) and an old LCD1990FXp (19", 1280x1024, for random SGIs at my desk). The EA275WMi is a modern LCD (LED backlight, IPS panel). The LCD2690WUXi² is older, but wide-gamut, hardware calibrated and will still blow you away for photo editing. I got the LCD1990FXp for 25 bucks, mostly to have a uniform look on my desk and because it will do 1280x1024 and support SOG. At least it has a VA panel so the colors don't suck.

Thanks for the advice. :D

The NEC EA245WMi it will be then. (Maybe two of them.)

I like the conservative look.
