Advices before buying a SCSI CDRom/DVDRom (OCTANE)
Hi,

I'm looking for some advices before buying a SCSI CDRom (or DVDRom) to plug to my Octane (Irix 6.5.26).
What are brands and ref work perfectly with Irix 6.5 (espacially for booting and to reinstall the system), burning files, listening audio CD or watching DVD (^_^) ?
I know that some Plextor, Yamaha, Teac or Pioneer work very well with Irix but I don't know what kind of réf I have to looking for.

Re: Advices before buying a SCSI CDRom/DVDRom (OCTANE)
I bought Toshiba SD-M1401 drives from eBay, they work fine in my O2 so can't see why they won't work for an Octane. They also have 512byte / 2048byte jumper support and will boot IRIX media fine.

I've not tested DVD VOB file playback, suspect my O2 is too slow for that. They do read unprotected DVDs fine as well.

You *HAVE* to get firmware >1009 or DVD discs won't read properly. I flashed both my drives to 1009, one is RPC-1 and the other RPC-2. Smile

Plextor I believe work well I believe. The below is a copy / paste from the Octane Hardware Aggregator by Generatrix on Nekochan.

Code:
- SCSI CD-ROM Drives:
1. SGI External CD-ROM (bootable; Granite case, Toshiba mechanisms of varying speeds)
2. Toshiba TXM3401E1 (does audio cd's, but requires caddies)
3. Plextor PX12TSe
4. Plextor PX20TSe
5. Plextor UltraPlex 40x

- SCSI CD-RW Drives:
Note: Unless indicated, successful use as PROM boot device and/or audio-over-SCSI have not been verified.
1. Plextor CD-R PX-R820T 1.08
2. Plextor Plexwriter 12/10/32
3. Plextor Plexwriter 40/12/40S
4. Sony CRX145S 10x4x32
5. Yamaha CRW4416SX 4x4x16
6. Yamaha CRW6416SX 6x4x16
7. Yamaha CRW8424SX 8x4x24
8. Yamaha CRW8824SX 8x8x24
9. Yamaha CRW2100SX 16x10x40
10. Yamaha CRW2200SX 20x10x40

- SCSI DVD-ROM Drives:
1. SGI External DVD-ROM Drive (bootable; SGI Model CMN020; Klingon Gray enclosure)
2. Pioneer DVD-304S (bootable, audio-over-SCSI)
3. HP C4315 (an OEM'd Pioneer 304S - HP enclosure requires modification - bootable, audio-over-SCSI)
4. Pioneer DVD-305S (bootable, audio-over-SCSI not yet tested)
5. HP C7499B (an OEM'd Pioneer 305S - bootable, audio-over-SCSI)

- SCSI DVD-RAM Drives:
1. Matshita (Panasonic) LF-D291 (SCSI)

Re: Advices before buying a SCSI CDRom/DVDRom (OCTANE)
Apparently the SD-M1401 has some termination issues when used in an external enclosure. They are easy to come by on eBay as they are often pulled from Sun systems.
