Re: Writing CD-Roms compatible with IRIX

Workgroups don't really come into it. Sounds more like firewall blocking to me. Check Windows 7 and try disabling the firewall for testing. FTP should work fine via IP address - as should Sharity if required. Can you ping the Windows 7 machine from IRIX? Try IP and hostname to see which (if any) work.

Re: Writing CD-Roms compatible with IRIX

There's an install script - it's not a Software Manager program. Unpack the archive and read the installation notes, it is pretty straightforward.

Re: Writing CD-Roms compatible with IRIX

I still recommend Sharity as the easiest approach in my personal opinion. Install it on your SGI, share a folder on your PC, then mount the share with Sharity. Then simply navigate to the mounted path on your SGI and copy what you want. On my PC I have a data drive with the root shared. By mounting ...

Re: What's the most newbie-accessible SGI system?

I agree it's one of the most newbie-friendly systems. Main issues are just that it's not very fast, and can be very fragile and temperamental.

Re: Writing CD-Roms compatible with IRIX

Personally I use Sharity on my SGI systems. Allows them to see and mount SMB shares from Windows machines as if they're part of the native IRIX filesystem. The demo version is fine for general use as it allows one mount without any other limitations.

Re: What's the most newbie-accessible SGI system?

Another advantage of the O2 for a complete newbie is that it has VGA out. Most other SGIs use 13W3 which means you need an adapter - well, apart from Fuel and Tezro of course (DVI).

Re: Best Monitor option for SGI machines?

I currently use a Dell 2007FPb for my systems. 20", 1600x1200 resolution support, and works fine with SoG. I tend not to opt for widescreen monitors due to the issues with getting older systems like the Indigo2 to work with them without stretching the image.

Re: Writing CD-Roms compatible with IRIX

It's worth noting the tool I've used before is for writing IRIX images to CD where the filesystem is EFS. ImgBurn can do this (and is free), but it's just an image writing tool - not a tool for authoring CDs from scratch.

For transferring stuff to my SGI systems, I generally use the network.

Re: A modern browser on Irix

To be honest, you might be better off trying to work on and/or improve WebRenderingProxy. This is a tool that runs on a modern machine and can download and render webpages before turning them into a static image with an imagemap for the links. You take an ancient browser on IRIX, set the proxy to yo...

Re: What makes a good machine?

For me, it has to be a system running an OS that I feel in control of, and that I can depend on. Having a decent software library is also very important. IRIX for me doesn't make the cut as a daily driver due to lack of software and the age of the associated hardware - my SGIs are just for hobby use...
